On Wednesday evening the girls’ under-16 side faced local rivals in the Warwickshire School FA County Cup final at Rugby Town's Butlin Road stadium. Nerves were high as the girls arrived at the stadium in their uniform before receiving their smart new AVS kit in the club changing rooms. There were mixed emotions in the changing rooms as numerous students were about to play their final game for AVS. After a team talk and an official welcome from the match day officials the girls were soon lined up in the tunnel lead by captain Hughes ready to walk on onto the much larger than usual pitch and a stand full of supporters.

The girls started a little unsettled, struggling to keep possession of the ball which left Coach Webb a little frustrated in her rectangular restricted area!! :-) Before long, nerves settles and Valley began to play some nice football creating numerous chances keeping the Rugby High defence very busy. Before long Abbie Vassell opened the scoring as she slotted a through ball from Hughes into the bottom corner! The Valley midfield worked tirelessly as the crowd witnessed end to end action. Keeper Francioso made some crucial saves and Jennings, Davies, Neidinska and Hartfield mopped up in defence. Valley then went 2-0 up as substitute Trevor came on and scrambled the ball into the back of the net. Rugby High responded quickly determined to stay in the game and scored just before half time.

The second half saw Valley play some wonderful football, Ferrar, Wilson, Jones and Sinclair worked tirelessly down the wings, delivering some great crosses into the box as Oxley and Hartfield controlled the game from the middle. Forwards Board, Vassell and Hughes rang rings around Rugby High’s defence creating some great goal scoring opportunities. Hartfield’s free kick from the edge of the box hit the crossbar and Rugby High’s keeper denied Hughes and Board from getting on the score sheet. Vassell then grabbed her second before screaming a long range shot into the bottom corner to secure her hat-trick just before the final whistle.

Congratulations to all girls who played, they should be proud of such a fantastic performance to finish the season in style.

A big thanks must also go to Rugby Town Football Club for hosting the match and helping Miss Webb organise the event and to all friends, family and AVS staff that showed their support on the day.

‘What a roller coaster of emotions. This was the second musical I have directed at Avon Valley School, and I have to say it was  a joy and pleasure to work with such dedicated and passionate students.  After months of hard work, it was truly a proud moment for me to see them grow in confidence and experience  so much pleasure in performing.  I would do it all over again!
(Elisa Wheatley,  Director of ’Les Miserables’)

‘It was my first show and I was so nervous, but I have made so many friends doing the show.  I didn’t expect to enjoy the show as much as I did.  But once the play had started it was the best time ever, and I wish I could do it all again’ (Jordan Taylour – Eponine)

‘I have been involved in the annual school show for the past four years and ‘Les Miserables’ was by far the best production we have ever put on. The relationship between the cast grew and also between the teachers too! My confidence really improved with every night I performed. Being a part of ‘Les Miserables’  was an amazing experience and I know that everyone involved would agree with me too!  (Hollie Aires,  Fantine)

CSI - AVS Forensic Scientists
Wednesday, 21 March 2012

Out students were provided a fantastic opportunity to work in a University Chemistry Laboratory gaining practical analytical skills in Chemistry, confidence and teamwork.

The students worked as a team to solve a murder mystery competition by looking at the clues and evidence left at the crime scene. Using their analytical chemistry skills to investigate samples and find the culprit.

“This gave me the opportunity to the work as a real life forensic scientist.”

The university’s Professor of Chemistry Nick Barber even gave the students an explosive display of fizzing, banging and colourful chemical reactions.
