Universities work with young people who have university potential

The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College is one of a number of local schools that have been selected by two universities to participate in the Think Higher – Coventry and Warwickshire programme.

After receiving funding from Higher Education Funding Council, The University of Warwick and Coventry University are working in partnership and have formed the ‘Think Higher’ programme, part of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), which has the aim of encouraging more young people to consider studying at a university in the future.

Laura Fisher, Raising Aspirations Coordinator, said “As part of the project we hope the young people we work with will develop confidence and skills, and have the information and tools, which will enable them to apply for a university place.

Laura added, “I really enjoy working with the young people in the schools and organisations I cover across Rugby. During my two days per week at Avon Valley I work with 46 students who have been identified as having university potential, all of whom have been a joy to work with.”

Alison Davies, Headteacher commented “We encourage all of our students to have high aspirations and as a school we are very grateful of the time Laura spends working with, and encouraging, our students.”
