Festivities and Fun at The Avon Valley School

Throughout December students, and staff, from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College have taken part in a range of festive activities and have supported number of good causes, despite the school being closed for two days following heavy snow and freezing conditions.

During the final week of term, the school continued its long standing tradition by running a special Christmas dinner for each of the school’s House groups. In the final week the school’s catering staff prepared, cooked and served over 1000 Christmas dinners while the students took a break from lessons to pull crackers, listen to festive tunes and enjoyed themselves with their friends.

One of this year’s festive highlights was the school’s musical production of Charles Dickens’ classic ‘A Christmas Carol’. The large scale production involved students from every year group and was performed in front of sell-out audiences on two consecutive evenings. On the show’s debut evening Rugby’s MP Mark Pawsey and the Mayor of Rugby Borough Council, Mrs Belinda Garcia, were special guests in the audience.

Following the show Mark Pawsey sent a message to the school via Twitter saying “Really enjoyed the show! Fantastic performances across the entire cast of actors and dancers! Well done to everyone involved.”

Away from the stage and spotlight, kind hearted school staff once again supported foster care leavers by donating items which have been used in hampers by placement support worker Norma Wilson from Warwickshire County Council. Over the last 17 years Norma has created hundreds of hampers which go to young people who have recently left care.

The school staff also supported Refuge an organisation which support women and children who have experienced domestic violence. Instead of sending Christmas the staff donated £250 to the charity to support their good work. In addition, the staff also wore Christmas jumpers to support ‘Save the Children’.

Renata Bartha, a talented artist, from Year 10 won the school’s Christmas card competition by designing the school’s official Christmas card for 2017. Renata’s design which features holly, bells and snow flakes will be sent out to organisations that work with the school throughout the year.

Alison Davies, Headteacher, said, “Christmas is a special time of year and it has been wonderful to see both students and student fully engaging in the Christmas spirit. The school show was a real highlight and I’d like to congratulate the students and staff for putting on a first class performance.

I’d like to say a special thank you to our site team who did a wonderful job clearing snow and ice to ensure the school was safe for our students and staff and I’d also like to thank our catering team for doing a wonderful job in ensuring it was possible for every student to enjoy a Christmas dinner.”
